Mixed Media

Fun technique to try out for Mixed Media art. 

Joint Compound that you can get at local hardware store and various stuff to stamp and press into it. 

I started with a 6x6 canvas that was prepped with gesso and layered a thin layer of joint compound on it. I then took various stamping materials to press into it. The dotted lines under the hearts is from a hair comb and the flower motif is from a scrapbook border (paper card stock) that gave a good impression. The rest are stamps. 

After you get the stamping done, let it dry out for 48+ hours. Since it was on canvas it seem to dry a little slower, maybe I had it on too thick in some places. After it's dry, I put on a clear coat of acrylic spray. Then painted the base coat with fluid acrylic yellow, let dry, spray with clear acrylic, and then added the next color, wiped off areas where I wanted the yellow to show through and repeated the process.

Picture taken outside for better lighting. 

Sharing what's on the easel, this one almost ended up as scrap. I began this a couple months ago and had a clear direction of where I was going with it but then I got some "advice" on what would look better.... and then it went way south from there.

Anyway, it sat around for awhile before I said "whatever!" it'll be whatever it will be, so I threw some pastels on it and added more watercolor to it and here we are. There still a few tweaks I want to do to it but I'm happy that it didn't end up as scrap.

So moral of the story is don't ask for directions when you already know where your going. :)

"Get the Lead Out Abstract"

Happy Sunday!

Some day's I just want to "get the lead out" and just paint something, mainly because I'm so impatient and limited on time and Dang it!, I just want to feel like I've accomplished something :-) 

Btw, when writing this, I thought 'what is the meaning of  "Get the Lead Out"?'

I didn't have a clue of it's origin and true meaning so I had to look it up and found this definition:

"is short for "Get the lead out of your ass/britches/butt/feet/
pants", which is long for "Move!" These expressions originated in
the U.S. circa 1930."

"Old" but "New" Dragonfly painting - Alma's Dragonfly

Hi There!

Gosh, I wanted to post this LAST year! LOL, oh well, life got in the way :-)

Alma's Dragonfly is a painting I did for my nephew Robbie and wife Alma. They always liked my other dragonfly painting I did and wanted one like it. For this one I wanted to experiment with different mediums, so I started it with Acrylic, then on to Watercolor and last touches were Pastel.

As you can see here the differences between the two. (sorry about the bad lighting and reflections).

Paint and Draw Together is one of my favorite painting challenge site, the photo's for the challenge is always top notch and beautiful. I highly recommend joining along.

This month's really pushed my boundaries on painting lace, ugh! to many details! ugh! my inner immature painting child was whining about doing it because I was sure to mess it up. So I left it for last and struggled along and was ready to forget about posting it, till dear hubby walks in and says that looks great! (Love this guy!) so voila! here it is and Thanks for looking!

E1 Abstract - For Emily

3.13.11- Updated E1 Abstract. I've been messing with this since I last posted it and have done a few revisions to it, seeing something I didnt like and tweaking it. Mainly softening the distracting center ball, lines leading off and toning down whites which I liked at first, but distracting later. I've also deepened the colors and added more darks. Sorry for all the varying lighting issues, I wanted to take this in natural lighting but time was limited on catching the best light. Thanks for looking!

Hello!

Got up early on Saturday to prepare food for my granddaughter Emily's 1st birthday. At least that's what I intended to do... Get up early, prepare food, get ready for party, and maybe start a painting. Uh, it went more like start painting, keep painting, oh crap, I gotta stop painting, and on and on because I couldn't tear myself away from painting this. Eventually I did force myself to go make the food and get ready and finally leave the house for the party!

So the title of this painting is "E1" abstract for my granddaughter "Emily 1st" birthday. It started out with simple things I found around my desk. Traced around the items and painted with Aliz Crimson, Aureolin, Burnt Sienna & Black (pthalo green+aliz crimson)

Aloha! My sister-in-law Noreen, just came back from a 14 day cruise to Hawaii, Lucky girl! She has a zillion photo's to process but chose this lovely orchid for us to paint. I actually was surprised that Noreen brought this over because I thought she was coming over to finish up a Cala Lily painting we started at Birgit O'Conner's workshop a previous weekend (will be posting soon after I finish it!). I love surprises and this was fun to paint.

Was searching through my pictures on my computer and found this delightful Ewe that I snapped in Avebury in England. It was a wonderful trip I hope to make again. Doesn't she look so cute smiling there!
